Nuku’alofa – August 22, 2019: 1.50pm (Nuku’alofa Times): Ikale Tahi head coach Toutai Kefu fully understands the importance of a positive showing from his boys when they play the Western Force at Te’ufaiva Park in Nuku’alofa this weekend.
Tonga’s match against the Western Force in Nuku’alofa this weekend is a chance for the ‘Ikale Tahi to reconnect with home fans, Kefu told RNZI.
The Australian side are already in Tonga preparing for the match against the ‘Ikale Tahi at Teufaiava stadium on Saturday.
Kefu said the fixture was an important one for Tonga’s World Cup build up before warm up matches against Fiji and the All Blacks.
Home matches for the national side have been few and far between over the past decade, he said.
“That is the main reason why we are doing it. Just to give something back to our supporters and our fans in Tonga. We wanted to bring a game to them, we wanted to reconnect with them,” Kefu said.
“Hopefully we can have a win and they can see us off on a positive note towards the World Cup.”
The Ikale Tahi will take on Fiji at Eden Park next Saturday before wrapping up their World Cup warm up against the All Blacks a week later.
“Certainly not going to be any easier but we like it like that so that we can test ourselves out,” Kefu said.
“We will work our boys and see our combinations which is important.”
The journey to Japan continues on Saturday as the Ikale Tahi team goes up against Australia’s Western Force in another important clash to prepare for the upcoming Rugby World Cup.
In a special afternoon for Tongan locals there is a special curtain raiser between the Tongan Barbarians vs President’s XV featuring the likes of Nili Latu, George Smith and Hosea Saumaki.
The main game between the Ikale Tahi v Western Force kicks off at 3pm while the curtain raiser kicks off at 1pm.
