Nuku’alofa – September 3, 2019: 3.30pm (Nuku’alofa Times): Officers from the Drug Enforcement Taskforce have arrested nine men and a haul of illicit drugs and illegally imported ammunition.

The arrests were done at three different locations in Tongatapu between August 30 and September 1.

With the help from Police Detector Dog Zander, Police seized 4,847 of illegally
imported live bullets, 4 packs of methamphetamine (1.86 grams), and 61.3 grams of
cannabis.

The nine arrested included a 46-year-old man from Pelehake, a 60-year-old man
from Ha’atu’a ‘Eua, a 50-year-old man from Fanga, a 49-year-old man from Hauloto,
three men between the ages of 31 to 45 from Vaini, a 36-year-old man from
Tatakamotonga and a 35-year-old man from Longolongo.

All accused persons have been charged accordingly with unlawful possession of
illicit drugs and live bullets, and are in police custody to appear in Court at a later
date.

“Police are concerned with the significant amount of ammunition that have been
smuggled into the country and the risks they pose to community safety. We therefore
urge members of the public to come forward with any information that will help with
police investigation,” Deputy Police Commissioner Pelenatita Fe’ao Vaisuai of the Tonga Police Force said.

“Police will continue to work closely with the community to prevent the harm illicit
drugs cause and the ongoing criminal activity associated with their use.
We encourage anyone who may have information about drug related offending to
contact their nearest Police station, or ring 23417 or 922.”
