Nuku’alofa – October 30, 2020: 9.45am (Nuku’alofa Times): Board member Manu Mataele is the Tonga Rugby Union rep on the Joint Management Committee proposed by World Rugby to help salvage rugby in the Kingdom.
He was selected at last night’s Board meeting at the TRU Head office in Fasi.
Current interim Chief Executive Officer and Vice President Fe’ao Vunipola will not have any say in the committee.
Manu joins Cabinet Minister Poasi Tei, the government rep, and a World Rugby rep, Mike McGovern.
Their appointment will be announced by World Rugby soon but Times Sport has been told that these are the three who will make up the committee.
World Rugby will also name an Independent Chairman.
The JMC will then have the first task of interviewing and appointing a Chief Executive Officer, who will then manage the TRU with the joint committee.
This has been done as World Rugby has lost faith in the current TRU team and wants changes to be done.
Expressions of interest for the CEO post will be advertised soon.
World Rugby has stopped all funding to the TRU until all issues relating to reporting is completed.
