HONIARA,SOLOMON ISLANDS- MARCH 31,2021: 9.55AM (ABC/PACNEWS): Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has blasted public servants and front line workers for not taking their COVID-19 vaccine jab with only 600 doses administered after three days of vaccinations.
Solomon Islands received 24,000 doses of the Astrazeneca vaccine earlier this month under the COVAX facility with 7,000 doses allocated for leaders and frontline workers in the capital Honiara.
“I am extremely disappointed that many frontline public servant working in our frontline agencies have not turned up to be vaccinated,” said Sogavare.
He said public servants won’t be able to carryout their duties to protect the country if they were not vaccinated themselves.
He called on health workers and public servants to come forward to get their shot before Wednesday, when vaccinations wrap up in the capital.
Health officials will send 17,000 doses to communities on Solomon Islands western border, over worries that a major outbreak next door in Papua New Guinea could spill over.
Solomon Islands will also get a further 20,000 doses of the Chinese made Sinopharm vaccine in coming weeks, but officials say it will not administered until the World Health Organisation gives approval for its use.
Solomon Islands has recorded 19 coronavirus cases, the latest a foreign national who travelled from Papua New Guinea last week and tested positive in quarantine….. PACNEWS
