Nuku’alofa – March 31, 2021: 1.45pm (Nuku’alofa Times): COVID-19 vaccines are now in Tonga.
This has been confirmed to the local media today.
An official announcement will be made at 7.30pm tonight on TV Tonga by the Ministry of Health.
“The Ministry of Health wishes to confirm that the COVID19 AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccines will arrive at Fua’amotu Airport today Wednesday 31 March 2021, at approximately 1pm,” the Ministry of Health’s media alert said.
“This is made possible through the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) facility. COVAX is co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi and the World Health Organization (WHO), alongside key delivery partner, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
“The facility offers a reliable supply of safe and efficient vaccines especially for Pacific countries like Tonga, who do not have direct access to manufacturers.
“The Ministry of Health will also hold a live announcement from the Tonga Broadcasting Commission with further details this evening at 7.30pm. The announcement will be streamed on Television Tonga, Radio AM 1017 and FM 90.0.”
Tonga is one of the few countries still free from COVID-19.
