Nuku’alofa – May 26, 2021: 6.40pm (Nuku’alofa Times): The Ministry of Health confirmed today that there has been no death linked to the Covid-19 vaccination currently been administered here in Tonga.
In its weekly update sent out to members of the media today, the Ministry said “there has been no reported deaths linked to the Covid-19 vaccine”.
The Ministry acknowledges that there are risks associated with the vaccination, with mild side effects.
Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Reynold Ofanoa has time and again reiterated that local should expect some side effects like headaches, fever and body pains after getting vaccinated.
He has also advised that there are risks involved and people were to exercise their own freedom in getting vaccinated or not.
There have been some opposition to the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, which arrived in Tonga on March 31. The vaccine was brought into Tonga through the COVAX Facility, in the global partnership’s effort to deliver at least two billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines by the end of 2021.
The Health update states that 28,150 people have been vaccinated to date, which is a milestone achievement for the Ministry and the people of Tonga
“The Ministry has exceeded our expectations of 28,000 doses and we still have 40 vials remaining to be administered before the vaccine expires on 31 May 2021,” the statement said.
This includes 1,795 who have been vaccinated in ‘Eua.
The Ministry is still tracking zero wastage of vaccine doses.
A total of 29, 151 people have been registered to date, with no extreme allergic reactions reported.
The rate of adverse events reported as per the number of people that have been vaccinated to date remains at 0.5%.
His Majesty King Tupou VI, Her Majesty Queen Nanasipau and Her Royal Highness Princess Salote Pilolevu Tuita have all been vaccinated.
Prime Minister Hon Dr Rev Pohiva Tuioneto’a and members of his Cabinet have also been vaccinated.
