Nuku’alofa – September 15, 2021: 2.30pm (Nuku’alofa Times): The Tonga Rugby Union Centennial Rugby Championship kicks off on Friday at Te’ufaiva Stadium with the women’s 7s tournament first on the show.
Vahe Loto and Vahe Kolo will kick off the event at 9am, with the event also being held on the day to celebrate the birthday of His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Tupouto’a.
Vahe Hihifo will take on Vahe Hahake in the second game, Vahe ‘Eua meets Vahe Niua while Vahe Vava’u and vahe Ha’apai clash in the final match of Round 1 of the women’s 7s competition.
The men’s clashes will follow after that.
Tournament Director ‘Aisea Aholelei said the teams have been pooled into two different pools – the 4 Tongatapu teams are in one pool while the island teams are in the other.
The men’s competition will start off with Hihifo meeting Hahake at 11am.
That will be followed by Vahe Loto and Vahe Kolo meeting up with ‘Eua and Niua battling off in the last game of the day.
Vava’u and Ha’apai had requested that they play the main game of the program on Saturday, following the finals of the Under-16 competition.
‘Aisea said the tournament will be exciting, especially with the two pools.
“We have pooled the teams like that so that it makes the tournament exciting,” he said.
“The top teams will then play off against each other. The champion island team against the champion Tongatapu team.”
