Nuku’alofa – October 20, 2021: 11.15am (Nuku’alofa Times): Three hundred Tongans. mostly seasonal workers who are stuck in New Zealand, will fly into Fua’amotu International Airport on October 27, government has confirmed.
Chief Executive Officer for Disaster Management (MEIDECC) Paula Ma’u confirmed this today.
The flight will eventuate from Christchurch and not from Auckland.
Auckland is out of bounds at the moment because of the current cases of COVID-19 there.
“There are around 200 locals who worked as seasonal workers who are coming on the flight,” Mr Ma’u confirmed.
Others are members of the Tongan Olympic squad that have been waiting for flights in New Zealand while others are returning Tongans.
Tonga is yet to confirm whether there will be opening of borders by the end of the year because government wants a higher vaccination rate before it considers opening borders.
